Q: Hey, Dr. Hunter! What last minute medical advice would you give as we enter the holiday season? I need all the help I can get this year!
A: First of all, need I remind you that we are in the midst of the cold and flu season? Hopefully you have at least gotten your seasonal flu shot and if you are in the high-risk category, the H1N1 shot.
If you’re out at the malls shopping, wash your hands often. Sneeze and cough in the crook of your elbow to prevent the spread of germs. These simple measures do plenty to prevent illness during this special time.
Now more than at any time of the year, stretching every dollar is crucial. If you happen to have paid your insurance deductible, now is the time to ask your primary care doctor about any high-ticket testing or procedures that may be indicated before year’s end.
For instance, if you are in need of a screening colonoscopy…what better way to greet the holiday season?! If, on the other hand, you are in the market for such testing next year (as in you are turning 50 in 2010!) now may be the time to increase your contributions to any health savings accounts.
Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy New Year to you and yours!
